Fees and Payment Information

Jan Ryder, Ph.D.

editor@myfinaldraft.com

Since my time is worth the same whatever type of editing I’m doing, I charge the same hourly rate for all services. I have found that charging by the word or page usually means that some clients end up paying more while others pay less when computed on an hourly basis, and so a straight charge seems fairest to me for all my clients. I do, however, offer a discount for graduate students, adjuncts, and independent scholars. My regular fee is $44/hour, or $40 with the discount.

The amount of time it takes me will of course vary by the editing level and the overall writing quality of the original document, but a very rough average would be between 1200 and 1800 words per hour for the typical ESL paper. Some papers already in good shape by native speakers might be closer to 2200/wph or even higher, while the more challenging ones might be as low as 1000 to 1100/wph, or sometimes even lower. Also, unlike some editors, I go through every document at least twice, since it's impossible for the eye to pick up everything that needs to be done the first time around. So although I may take longer than those editors, the editing quality will be higher.

Thus, final costs will be determined by a number of factors, including some or all of the following:

  • Level of editing desired; for an explanation of the different levels, click on editorial services.
  • Initial document quality: the better the original writing, the less editing is required, and the lower the costs;
  • Document length;
  • Turnaround time: rush jobs are charged an additional 25%;
  • Number of tables needing reformatting;
  • Formatting requirements, such as formatting of theses and dissertations to meet university requirements.

I will be happy to provide a free sample edit of a few pages so that you can see my work before making a final decision; you pay only if you decide to continue with my services. I will also provide an approximate quote of final costs.

Most clients pay me through PayPal, which is the easiest way to pay. PayPal is the largest online payment service in the US with 78 million customers worldwide. Owned by eBay, this highly rated service allows you to make secure payment online by credit card or by money transfer from your bank account. In some instances I will also accept payment by cashier’s check, certified check, money order, or direct bank or credit union draft.

As soon as I have received your payment, I will return your document.
